Subhash Ghai: Karma was made in 1985, when the industry was facing its worst period - Exclusive
Subhash Ghai recently highlighted that the biggest milestone for his production banner, Mukta Arts, was the success of 'Karma.'. He stated, "Karma remains the highest-grossing film for Mukta Arts out of the 42 films we have produced in over 44 years."
He elaborated, "Before the digital era, in 2005, 'Karma' was a huge financial success. It was a cash box movie in every repeat run in theatres for distributors as they needed cash." Ghai reflected on the early 80s, a challenging time for the film industry due to rampant piracy and the rise of video parlors. He explained, "Karma was made in 1985, when the industry was facing its worst period due to piracy and boom of video parlors. To combat this, we used 70mm film with six-track stereophonic sound."
The Hindi version of 'Karma' was also a major hit in South India, performing well in non-Hindi regions, revealed the filmmaker. Regarding the film's conception, Ghai noted, "After the success of musical hits like 'Karz' and 'Hero,' I wanted to make an action film, so I wrote this story about patriotism. I envisioned it as a grand cinematic experience with elaborate production design and a mix of both established and new stars of that era."
'Karma' featured a stellar cast, including Dilip Kumar, Nutan, Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Sridevi, Poonam Dhillon, and Anupam Kher. When asked about handling egos among such a prominent ensemble, Ghai replied, "Egos are never an issue when a director has delivered multiple hits. Whether in the 90s or today, stars tend to show egos only to the needy ones."
